David Geffen Hall Chandeliers

2022

The renovation of David Geffen Hall draws inspiration from the ancient Roman traditions of Pentecostal Mass, in which rose petals were dropped from the Pantheon’s oculus onto the faithful to symbolize the descent of the Holy Spirit.

From a distance, the eight chandeliers appear as elegant columns of falling petals. Yet, as one approaches, the intricate details of their design unfold, revealing thoughtful references to musical instruments. The concentric circles adorning the domed petals are reminiscent of the process involved in cymbal making, while the stems that connect them evoke the keys of a woodwind.
