Stacking Planter

2016

stoneware, glazed interior, unglazed exterior

The shape of the Stacking Planters is inspired by the beautiful designs of high voltage ceramic insulators found on power lines.

The bottom ring is the saucer. This design integrates both the planter and the saucer into one form holistically.

These planters can be purchased through our manufacturing partner Areaware.

Cold Cuts Coasters Rugs

2013

A collaboration with Tai Ping Carpets to translate our Cold Cuts Coasters into rugs. The Cold Cuts Coasters are made by cutting into a bundle of fibers (fabric, wood, rope, etc.), creating a surface of the ends of these fibers. These hand tufted rugs not only translate the graphic but also the spirit of the original object by utilizing a different type of fiber to represent each material in the coasters.

Metamorphic Rock Bookend

2011

A simple design that makes use of small pieces of beautiful stone that are normally discarded. These stone pieces are placed in a simple 3 sided mold and cement is poured in to make a “macro-terrazzo” object with 3 flat sides that allow it to interface with a shelf and a book.

Originally designed for the Phillips de Pury Design Store in New York

Mission Chinese Food (East Broadway)

2014

The second NY Mission Chinese Food moved into a space that was a previously a restaurant and instead of starting over, a strategy of minor interventions for maximum impact was used.

The bar is clad in resin composite panels containing dried goods from Chinese medicine stores. They contain a variety of mushrooms, algae, and other herbs as well as more esoteric medicines like dried snakes.

A dining area was added downstairs with a row of banquet seating upholstered in metallic faux snake skin and with tufting buttons made from faux cloisonné baoding balls. The accompanying tables take advantage of the ability to see the whole row from high above and the individual tops combine to create a epoxy composite inlayed dragon. The inlays contain mylar, brass shavings, glass frit, pyrite and various other materials.

Oil Age Cutlery

Oil Age Cutlery was produced as a service for 2 (2 sets of 5 piece place setting, 2 sets of fish fork and knife, 1 pair salad serving, 1 pair serving), designed for BLOW UP at Friedman Benda. In accordance with the theme of the show, all pieces are oversized.

There is a popular resurgence in the craft practice of carving wood spoons and other eating utensils. Using the same techniques and tools as normally used to carve wood, these HDPE versions remove the grain of the wood material and focus purely on the texture. It also pairs a primitive technique with a material most associated with modernity.

Heron Preston x Carhartt WIP Workshop

2018

For the launch of Heron Preston’s Carhartt WIP collection in Japan, we created a workshop about hands on recycling. Plastic bags from NYC were brought to Tokyo and melted together with Japanese bottle caps. They were made into the form of utility knifes and other small objects.

Walnut Coffee Table (2×2 Grid)

Walnut wood and stone are combined here to create a warm, modern look. The smooth, stone inserts are carved out in a range of unique patterns, based on the walnut shell cross -sections, connecting to the diversity of the natural world and geological time.

Greenwood Side Table (Octagon)

2024

The imagery of this table is inspired by the scenic views and organisms of Green-Wood Cemetery, featuring its colorful trees, vines and flowers, skeletons, and animal life. Our visits to Fonthill Castle also influenced this piece. Here, we used a press molding technique similarly done for the Moravian ceramic tiles that cover that building.
