Thank You (Have a Nice Day) Stools

2018

Plastic bags are made from HDPE, one of the most recyclable plastics, but become paradoxically problematic in their final form. As bags, they entangle recycling machinery, and their minimal material renders the energy expended in reclaiming them inefficient.

The true worth of a bag lies in its printed graphic, a narrative thread that ties it to a specific place and moment. Iconic New York City plastic bags, with their storied imagery, were repurposed to line a steel mold. Combined with discarded plastic, they were melted and compressed, transforming ephemeral carriers into solid, enduring blocks—a reclamation of both material and memory.

An edition of 2 Thank You (Have A Nice Day) Stools were created for PlasticScene, an exhibition of designs made from post consumer waste, during London Design Festival 2018, organized by designer James Shaw and Laura Houseley, Editor-in-Chief of Modern Design Review.
